Boeing does not have a name, a configuration, or a launch date for the airplane that will eventually replace the 737 MAX. What it now has, as of a September 9, 2026 internal announcement, is someone specifically tasked with designing how that airplane will actually get built — years, possibly most of a decade, before the jet itself is likely to exist.

Boeing Commercial Airplanes CEO Stephanie Pope named Sean Black, the executive who has run Boeing's Wichita, Kansas operations since the company reacquired Spirit AeroSystems' fuselage plants there, as vice president of BCA Future Production System. In an internal message to staff, Pope wrote that Black will be "instrumental in shaping the industrial blueprint for Boeing's next commercial jet" — a role explicitly designed to develop the factory and assembly process in parallel with the aircraft's engineering, rather than waiting until a design is finalized to figure out how to manufacture it.

Who Sean Black is

Black arrives at the role with a résumé built almost entirely around the supply chain Boeing spent the past two years trying to bring back in-house. He spent nine years at Spirit AeroSystems — the Wichita-based fuselage supplier that built the 737's structure for decades before Boeing completed its roughly $8.3 billion acquisition of the company, folding Spirit's Wichita operations back into Boeing directly in a deal that closed in December 2025. At Spirit, Black served as chief technology officer and senior vice president of engineering, research and technology, giving him direct oversight of both the technical and manufacturing-process sides of fuselage production before the reintegration.

His background outside Spirit adds a competitive-intelligence dimension Boeing has openly valued in recent hires: Black also worked at Airbus, Boeing's principal rival, as well as at BAE Systems, the UK-based aerospace and defense contractor. Since the Spirit deal closed, Black has led Boeing's Wichita site itself, putting him in direct command of the facility Boeing has identified as central to whatever comes next in single-aisle manufacturing.

A role built to run ahead of the airplane it's for

What makes the appointment notable is timing relative to the program it serves. Boeing has no active next-generation commercial aircraft program. CEO Kelly Ortberg has said publicly and repeatedly throughout 2026 that a new jet remains years away, conditioning any launch decision on three things: Boeing getting its finances fully repaired (which Ortberg has said will "take a couple more years"), the underlying technology — particularly propulsion — reaching a mature enough state, and the market signaling sufficient demand to justify the investment. Aviation Week reported in a recent interview with Ortberg that the next narrowbody is effectively "moving to the right" on Boeing's internal timeline, with airline customers themselves reportedly pushing Boeing to prioritize reliability and output on existing programs — the 737 MAX and 787 lines — over chasing a clean-sheet design in the near term.

Boeing's own account of the strategic logic is that designing the factory alongside the airplane, rather than after it, is meant to avoid a repeat of a pattern that has dogged past programs: an aircraft design finalized in isolation from manufacturing considerations, only for production engineers to discover downstream that the design is expensive or difficult to build at scale. By standing up a "Future Production System" organization years before any aircraft configuration is chosen, Boeing is betting it can bake manufacturability into the next jet's DNA rather than retrofitting it later — mirroring how some rivals, including Airbus, have structured advanced manufacturing planning around future programs.

The last time Boeing made a defining choice about its single-aisle future was in 2011, when it opted to re-engine the existing 737 airframe — an architecture tracing back to 1967 — rather than pursue an entirely new aircraft, producing the 737 MAX that is still the company's core commercial product today and remains under intense regulatory and public scrutiny following its 2018-2019 grounding.

Wichita's elevated role

Black's appointment cannot be separated from what Boeing has been doing in Wichita more broadly. In May 2026, Ortberg announced a $1 billion investment in Wichita facilities over three years, covering upgraded manufacturing infrastructure, expanded employee training, and improvements to the production system generally — announced at a "Boeing Backs America" event roughly five months after the Spirit acquisition closed. Part of that investment includes a new workforce training center near Wichita State University's South Campus, intended to support thousands of trainees annually and expected to open by the end of 2026.

That investment was framed at the time primarily around near-term needs: integrating the newly reacquired Spirit fuselage plants and supporting the ramp-up of 737 MAX production, which Boeing has been pushing from 42 units per month toward 47 per month through 2026, pending FAA sign-off on each rate increase. Black's new appointment retroactively reframes some of that Wichita investment as also serving a longer-term purpose — positioning the site not just as the current fuselage source for the MAX, but as the proving ground for whatever manufacturing approach underpins Boeing's next all-new jet.

That dual mandate is a notable bet on a single site. Wichita is simultaneously being asked to stabilize and scale up production of Boeing's existing, still-recovering narrowbody program while also serving as an incubator for production methods meant to serve an aircraft that may not enter service until the back half of this decade or later, on Boeing's own general timeline signals. Whether those two objectives reinforce or compete with each other for capital, engineering attention and floor space at the Wichita site is a question Boeing has not addressed publicly in detail.

What Boeing still hasn't decided

It bears repeating that nothing about the next aircraft itself has been settled. Boeing has not disclosed a target seat range, a propulsion architecture, a composite-versus-metal fuselage decision, or a rough entry-into-service window beyond the general sense that it sits toward the latter part of this decade at the earliest. Ortberg has pointed to continued Boeing-NASA research into an advanced, highly efficient wing design as one technology thread the company is tracking for a future airplane, without committing that design to any specific program.

Industry discussion in recent months has also touched on whether narrowbody fuselages might eventually shift toward composite materials at high production rates — a question that remains unresolved industry-wide and was raised again just this month by Hexcel's chief executive, who noted that composite technology is advancing toward feasibility for high-rate narrowbody manufacturing, though no manufacturer has committed to that path for a next-generation single-aisle jet.

In that context, Black's appointment is best understood as an organizational and process decision rather than a product one: Boeing is beginning to build institutional muscle and leadership structure for a program that, by its own executives' accounts, could still be several years from a formal launch decision — a long runway that gives the newly created Future Production System organization considerable time to shape its approach before it has an actual airplane design to build around.
